Anzac Day, 25 April, marks the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli. This was the first military action our Anzacs saw in the First World War.
ANZAC stands for ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and it’s a term that evokes a sense of patriotism, heroism and sacrifice, as the landing at the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey met with fierce resistance, and resulted in the deaths of more that 8,000 Anzacs.
Because the Anzac troops arrived at Gallipoli at dawn, we now hold a commemorative service at dawn at the Shrine of Remembrance. Ex-servicemen and women march through the city and commemorative ceremonies are held at war memorials around the country.
Ther service runs from 5:45am to 6:30am.
